Week 907
907 is the number of weeks GFR has existed and the area code of Alaska. Coincidence!?
The early heatwave has passed and my office has dropped back to a pleasant temperature after becoming a sauna for a week or so.
Chris and I were both off on Monday but we were back in action alongside James from Tuesday continuing to work on Mavis. We managed to deploy the work we’ve been doing over the last couple of weeks that breaks up some long running Sidekiq jobs into many smaller jobs. These jobs used to run on a potentially large number of patients at a time and we’ve been splitting them to work on a patient at a time. Initial results look positive so we’re now focussing on removing some of the redundant code to simplify these jobs further. The hope is that we end up with simpler code and with a system that can more easily scale horizontally.
We were in the Good Machine office again on Wednesday which I continue to enjoy.
Code Club at my daughter’s school resumed on Tuesday after the half term break. I have a fairly consistent class of 7 at the moment which is much easier to manage than the larger groups I had before. I’d still like to grow it but will need some additional support for that and I haven’t had time to put much thought into it yet. In celebration of World Environment Day on 5 June (today!) a couple of the children enjoyed working on environment-themed projects from the Raspberry Pi Foundation.
Chris and I had another meeting with Nicola this morning to discuss Jam. Specifically focussed on the music conference/networking event happening next week (see weeks 893, 900 and 902 for more) that Chris and Nicola are attending. I mostly just listened in on the conversation and got excited by the ideas they were discussing. I also found myself wishing that we were able to pour more of our energy into this project.
Until next time.
– Chris
